Consultation continues on changes to schools in West Edinburgh
Friday Mar 23, 2018
Friday Mar 23, 2018
The council's education committee meets next week at a special session to allow ongoing discussion about the future of schools in the west and south west to continue.
Since the council announced last November that they would have to examine schools in the west and south west of the city to address building issues and also the changing school rolls in the area, the Education Convener Ian Perry and Vice-Convener Alison Dickie have attended almost 30 meetings with parents. And they say they are still listening, and will take into account all comments made until the schools consultation ends on 29 April.
Some parents have already indicated that they will make deputations to the special meeting next week which is now expected to last all day.
Council officers have now drafted various possible outcomes, and these are available in detail on the council website.
After next week's meeting the council will then take a decision in May as to future plans for all schools across Edinburgh which will be submitted to The Scottish Government. These will include submissions for schools in other areas of Edinburgh such as Trinity, Craigmillar and Liberton. It is likely that the government will announce funding for schools after the summer.
Even if the whole process is completed by the end of this year it is likely that it will take about four years for any new school will only be built.
We spoke to Education Convener Ian Perry about the need for such changes.

Talking about trams
Wednesday Mar 07, 2018
Wednesday Mar 07, 2018
The City of Edinburgh Council is now in Phase 2 of the process towards (perhaps) extending the tramline to Newhaven.
At this point they are about to ask stakeholders and members of the public for their views. Following a very positive result from a recent survey they are even more sure that it would be right to extend the line.
The Edinburgh Reporter speaks to Councillor Lesley Macinnes the Transport Convener about the process and how members of the public can get involved.

HippFest 2018
Tuesday Feb 06, 2018
Tuesday Feb 06, 2018
Affectionately known as ‘HippFest’ this annual event (Wed 21 – Sun 25 March 2018) is Scotland’s only festival dedicated to silent film - recently scooping two accolades in the international ‘Silent London’ poll – bronze for ‘Best Silent Film Festival’ and joint silver for ‘Best Silent Film Venue’ year-round.
This year’s programme is packed with film gems from the silent-era, talks on early cinema pioneers and world-class live music. Multi-instrumentalist David Allison opens the Festival on Wednesday night with his new score written to accompany a rare screening of thrilling adventure film The Last of the Mohicans: the first film adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper’s classic novel. Broadcaster and renowned musician/composer Neil Brand (BBC4 Sound of Musicals) playing live, accompanies romantic comedy The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg starring ‘the Queen of MGM studios’ Norma Shearer, and celebrated silent film accompanist and composer Stephen Horne and German percussionist Frank Bockius perform their live score for the BFI’s restoration Underground – a subterranean tale of love, jealousy, treachery and murder set in 1920s London.
Here we speak with Alison Strauss the Director.
